Hans Dieter John, Client

Dr Hans Dieter John and his wife Marilyn have
been cazenove+loyd clients for over 10 years.
They’re seasoned travellers – Bhutan, Nepal,
Morocco, sub-Saharan Africa (several times),
India and more – and they’re always looking for
something new, so it’s always an enjoyable
challenge to find a new destination with them.

This time round it was South America, specifically
Chile and Argentina, fresh ground for them. Flying
into Brazil, their first stop was the mighty Iguazu
Falls on the border between Brazil and Argentina,
a complex of 275 different falls including the
23,300ft Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat).
From there, with a stop-off for some city life in
Buenos Aires, it was south to the lakes, first on
the shores of Lago Nahuel Huapi in Argentina,
then across the border to Puerto Montt in Chile,
a dramatic landscape of broad rivers,
snowy mountains and lush forests.

From the watery south, they flew north to the
Atacama Desert, the driest place in the world.
Here they stayed in the oasis town of San Pedro,
from where they could explore the otherworldly
landscapes of volcanoes, geysers, rock valleys
and adobe houses by horse, in vehicles or on foot

Then, via a stop-off in the thriving city of Santiago
de Chile, they headed into Torres del Paine,
a national park with a natural beauty that rivals
anywhere on earth, and wildlife to match, from
puma to rhea. At their lodge, with its views of the
sharkfin-like peaks of the Cordillera del Paine, they
could plan the following day’s excursion before
heading out with their guide the next morning.

Finally, the Johns spent four days in the Chilean
winelands at an elegant estancia set in its own
vineyard. Then it was home to plan their next
trip – Antarctica?
