Luxury Safari in Tanzania

Simon & Miranda Willes, Clients

In choosing a honeymoon destination one might generally seek seclusion in a beach paradise with enough hotel stars to guarantee absolutely no hitches. The decision to fly to Tanzania on safari was taken with confidence that we both thrive on adventure and new experiences and had sat on enough beautiful beaches in our lifetimes. A shared interest in the countryside and wildlife shouted safari!

Honeymoons do however need to be exclusive and not group affairs, and C + L's recommendation of the Grumeti Reserves in Northern Tanzania provided both in a way that should remain a well kept secret. The Faru Faru river camp and the Sabora Plains tented camp both only cater for around eight couples at a time but with a service, attention and privacy formula that is rarely found. The two camps provided contrasting scenery, atmosphere and wildlife within a day's drive.

The highlight of the safari was two days riding accompanied by a guide in front and one at the back. No firearms are allowed to be carried and you and your horse represent potentially a defenceless meal. We had the luck to coincide with the wildebeest migration which must be the greatest natural wonder of the world, but it upsets the big predators who tend to hide away when they have had their fill. Probably for this reason we had two unexpectedly close riding encounters with lions which really got the adrenalin going but luckily they did not charge. Not for the fainthearted but otherwise rather thrilling.
