The holiday of a lifetime

Fergus McMullen, Client.

Kate and I were looking for the holiday of a lifetime with our five children to celebrate our 50th birthdays. Kate, by the way, still looking 40 and I looking 60 as the photos clearly show!

We found it through Nico Heath at cazenove+loyd. The first week was in the ‘bush' at Laragai House in Borana and the second week was on the beach, at Kizingoni.

George and Lucilla Stephenson (the owners) have been so clever in keeping Laragai House totally in keeping with its African bush surroundings inside and out. It felt like a family home and we settled in, never wanting to leave.

Jay Jay, our guide/host for the week was perfect for our family...he soon got the measure of our 20+ year old boys; action all the way! While at the same time looking after the girls and me, who needed to chill out every now and again.

Our day/night game drives were fabulous -elephants drinking within 20ft of us, cheetah with kittens, striped hyena and rhino, black and white within 100m of each other at one stage, to name just a few of the highlights.

One of our best excursions was our night spent camping in the bush. We all rode on wonderfully calm horses/ponies through the bush getting very close to impala and elephants on the way. Our dinner that night was delicious and the local monkeys must have thought it was some of their raucous relations nearby as the laughter round the camp fire got louder. To clear the heads the next morning Jay Jay led us off to a wonderful waterfall where we all dived off this (what seemed to me!) incredibly high rock into the freezing water below. Kate and I looked at each other and we could not have been happier.

The week at Laragai came to an end too soon, but it was time for a change of scene. The beach was beckoning.

Our impressive house was called Wasi Dubu, one of the houses at Kizingoni. It was very comfortable and we were looked after by the staff there like kings. The beach was only 100 m away and likewise the local bar...we were in heaven again! We did trips to Lamu Town & Selia Village, went deep sea fishing and caught 15 fish in a morning!, camel rides, dinner on the beach as well as relaxing and we got a tan.

Nico Heath had given Kate and I a holiday of a lifetime and we would like to thank him and cazenove+loyd for giving us those wonderful memories.
