Below we have detailed just three destinations where we can create extraordinary honeymoons in Latin America, which we hope will inspire you to consider this thrilling region for that once-in-a-lifetime-trip.
Guatemala and Belize
If you would like a honeymoon that blends beautiful beaches with an exotic jungle backdrop, towering smoke-ringed volcanoes and the opportunity to dive and snorkel in one of the world’s most diverse marine ecosystems, then Guatemala and Belize are the perfect pairing.
Combined, these two countries are a real microcosm of Latin America, forming a fantastic and easy-to-navigate introduction to the region. Begin your trip in Guatemala in the pretty colonial city of Antigua, exploring the cobblestone streets and local markets with our hand-picked guide, before travelling to the stunning Lake Atitlán to stay in one our favourite lodges, Casa Palopo, that sits right on the water’s edge. For adventurers, we can arrange a whole host of experiences, from kayaking to zip-lining and hikes in the surrounding valleys, but if you would like a slower pace, simply relaxing and watching life on the lake can be equally rewarding.
Further north, in Tikal we can arrange a night spent camping near the impressive ruins of Uaxactun, which date back further than any other Mayan city, possibly from as early as 900 BC. At dusk, you’ll climb a lookout tower for sunset drinks, followed by night-time jungle exploration. Keep an eye out for watchful owls and the coatimundi (long-tailed cousin of the raccoon). Afterwards, enjoy a delicious, locally-made dinner before retiring to bed where you’ll be soothed to sleep by all the sounds of the jungle.
Finish your honeymoon in Belize, with some more exploration of Mayan culture or some much-deserved time on the beach. Turtle Inn is the perfect beachside paradise, where you can unwind beneath shady palms, swim or snorkel in the warm Caribbean sea, or relax beside one of the infinity pools. For your own private paradise, we can also arrange for you to charter your own boat to visit secluded cayes surrounded by bright, turquoise waters.
Chile and Argentina
An exploration up and down Chile and Argentina is a truly epic honeymoon and an unbeatable choice for those with the time and budget.
Start by exploring vibrant Buenos Aires with one of our specialist guides who can show you a side of BA so many don’t see. Enjoy evenings spent at secret speakeasy bars or traditional tango clubs which only the locals know about. Your next stop could be one of Argentina’s top vineyards in Mendoza, where you can lounge in luxury in one of the lodges on an estate after a charming bicycle ride around the winery and a *few* toasts to your honeymoon.
Moving down Argentina, a myriad of different landscapes and environments await you. We can arrange for you to experience the gaucho lifestyle, staying in a rustic estancia in the Lake District. Further south lies wild and rugged Patagonia, which has some of our favourite hiking trails and the most magnificent glaciers. Here, we can create an adventure-packed few days, tailored to exactly what you want to see and experience. In terms of where to stay, we favour small, remote, homey lodges, such as Aguas Arribas, that offers the chance for you to be phone and internet free, so that you can truly switch off and enjoy the peaceful and romantic surroundings.
There is a fantastic guided hike from the lodge which takes in sights such as “the enchanted wood”, a beautiful area of tall twisty trees. On this trail, there are several viewpoints with benches so you can sit and enjoy a cup of tea and slice of cake, which the guide will have brought along for you. Past honeymoon clients often tell us on return that this was one of the highlights of their trip.
Continue your ultimate adventure with a flight to Santiago, Chile, from where you’ll make the short hour or so car journey north to the beautiful, bohemian city of Valparaiso, for a real slice of Chilean culture. The artistic seaside city is Chile’s main port and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Comprised of 42 hills set above a busy bay, it’s a sea of colourful buildings clinging onto the cliffs and pretty, paved side-streets just waiting to be discovered.
Heading further north, a visit to the Atacama Desert for more otherworldly scenery is one not to miss. Here we can arrange an array of activities from sand-boarding to swimming in deep salt lagoons. If you’d rather slow things down, you can relax at any one of our favourite luxury lodges and enjoy the spectacular starlit night sky, while sitting by a huge open pit fire.
There are so many different routes when combining a trip to Chile and Argentina but the thread that runs through every honeymoon we create is that the focus is always on unique experiences that offer you a real sense of the country and its different identities, whilst providing the privacy and luxury that is so important. We always get you off the tourist trail, while still taking in the must-see highlights. We can promise you it will be extraordinary.
Kick off your Brazilian honeymoon in style with a couple of nights in Rio, staying at the legendary Copacabana Palace or the ultra-chic Fasano Rio, both of which have prime positions on Ipanema beach. We can arrange dinners at the city’s most stylish restaurants and advise you on everything from the coolest areas to explore and the best sections of the beach to relax on.
After enjoying the fast-paced glamorous city-life, why not explore the countryside of Minas Gerais, which lies only a four-hour drive outside of Rio. Stay at the charming Reserva do Ibitipoca, which is adjacent to one of Brazil’s most beautiful national parks. With none of the trappings of modern life, to stay here is to take a step back in time but in all the comfort of a world-class hotel. Days can be spent horse riding, taking jungle walks and swimming in rock pools by a waterfall.
Your next stop could be the colonial city of Salvador in the north-east of Brazil which, with its distinctly African feel – reflected in the food, people, and culture – is a world away from Rio. After a couple of days in this vibrant city, the beautiful beaches of Bahia await – only an hour’s flight away. A fantastic choice for honeymoon couples is the Uxua Casa, in Trancoso. Just a short walk from the beach, this boutique hotel is comprised of little casas set around a pretty square, and is barefoot luxury at its best. The rooms are huge, light and airy and everything is made from natural materials, down to the taps, hooks and even Bose speaker holder, while the honeymoon suite is situated high in the trees for that secluded feel. While away evenings sipping Caipirinhas at the hotel’s rustic beach bar and enjoy relaxed dinners of the freshest seafood in the fantastic restaurant.
These suggestions are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of honeymoon options in Brazil and your Destination Expert will design an itinerary which perfectly matches your interests and dreams for your honeymoon. Whatever you decide, Brazil’s sheer size and variety means you really can have it all.
