THE ANCIENT MEDINAS ARE BURSTING WITH MYSTIQUE AND ARE WAITING TO BE EXPLORED

Africa + Indian Ocean

Morocco

Cultural sightseeing, bustling medinas, desert camps, mountain hiking, shopping in the souk

Exotic, hot and yet only a short flight from Europe, Morocco is a country with something for everyone, whether it’s shopping til you drop with a personal shopper extraordinaire in the medieval medinas (old cities) of Marrakech and Fez, hiking in the dramatic snow-capped peaks of the mountains in the high Atlas with their welcoming Berber population, camping out in the rolling sands of the Sahara amongst the desert nomads, exploring the laidback fishing villages on the windswept Atlantic coast or relaxing in one of the luxurious retreats that dot the countryside.

Morocco as a destination has exploded in the last few years – as has the choice of where to stay. The medinas of the Imperial Cities have been rejuvenated with the restoration of hundreds (even thousands) of riads – a house built around a garden courtyard with thick walls and windows overlooking the interior rather than the exterior to preserve the surprisingly cool air on even the hottest days – but as each one is so individual it’s imperative to get the right advice.

Best visited: October, November, February, March, April, May, June are warm and sunny. Evenings are cool in the winter months

All itineraries are individually designed, but as a guide, we can arrange five days in Morocco excluding flights from £450 per person.

visiting the sleepy town of EssaouIra

Essaouira is probably the best-known coastal town in Morocco. It is notoriously windy and a magnet for kite surfers and wind surfers. The influences of Berber, Portuguese and even Carthiginian cultures pervade a very atmospheric whitewashed medina and bustling harbour. A lovely place to relax for a few days.

wandering the medina of marrakech

In Marrakech there is an incredible variety of places to stay and we know and love the best Riads, hidden away in the alleys of the Medina. For those who want a more tranquil stay, there are lovely small, luxury hotels with lush gardens in the Palmeraie a short drive from the city. You can still find corners of the Medina which are charming and atmospheric.

your very own personal shopper

Personal shoppers in Marrakech can access the big manufacturers in the industrial areas and can open doors if you are looking for something very specific. And because they are paid in advance and pride themselves on their commercial savviness, they have a clear view on both price and quality.

photographic walking tours

A photographic walking tour of Marrakech typically starts with an early morning exploring the Medina as it wakes up. For around four or five hours you will walk around with a professional photographer, receiving technical advice but also cultural advice and recommendations. This can be great for amateurs or accomplished photographers.

Guides

Our relationships count for a lot and we still work with some of the same people we have worked with for twenty years. There is also constant change and the teams are always reviewing and adding to the experiences which they can offer and the lodges, hotels and guides they work with.

abdellatif benhrima

guide

private shopping guide Morocco

Abdellatif Benhrima unknowingly developed a love and understanding of Moroccan history as a child. Born and raised in Marrakech’s Medina, he discovered all of the hidden corners of his city living and breathing it as a child.  Besides a degree in linguistics, he later impressed the Moroccan Government and quickly earned his licence as a guide. Like few others he is able to enlighten his international clients with the delights of a country he is very proud of.

During the past 25 years he has become one of the most knowledgeable and respected guides in Morocco.  He has explored the hidden depths of the country from the sweeping sand dunes of the Sahara to the winding souks of Fez and at cazenove+loyd we love his ability to let his clients soak up the atmosphere and culture in a gentle but informative journey of discovery.
He does not just know the culture inside out, but he knows the people working within this fascinating country too.  Introducing you to local artisans and tradesmen, you will not be part of any tourist trail with Abdel, but will feel like a local, bargaining in the souks and learning about the local crafts and traditions.

Reviews

At c+l, we have no vested interest in the hotels and lodges which we select - we review everything and choose the best for a particular client. And because we visit our three regions on a regular basis and have details conversations with over 90% of our clients on their return, our choices can be refined continually. The choice of what is best for the client is our only consideration

dar roumana, fez

Boutique hotel Fez Morocco

Elevated above the Fez medina and with the Atlas Mountains in the distance, the atmosphere is peaceful, the accommodation is spacious and airy and your hosts will look after your every need. We are particularly fond of Dar Roumana as it is the perfect place from which to access all the excitement of the local culture, whilst still being able to return to serenity and space when you tire of the hustle and bustle of the city. What makes the difference here are your hosts Vanessa and her talented husband Victor who runs the kitchen.

The Capaldi is an oasis of mesmerising proportions, best enjoyed glass in hand taking in the Atlas Mountains as the sun sets on another day. Add to that a wealth of activities and cultures to learn about and you begin to understand the pleasure of staying at the Capaldi.
