Africa + Indian Ocean

powder-white Beaches, exceptional snorkelling, bird watching and fishing

Its turbulent history ravaged both its economy and the once superb wildlife but Mozambique’s coastline and offshore islands have remained wonderfully unspoilt.  Here, primeval mangrove swamps alternate with powder-white beaches - and low-impact development is being carefully and successfully integrated with a unique marine habitat. The diving and fishing are superb in the waters of the offshore islands, where a handful of fabulous, Crusoe-chic hideaways have been created.

The (sometimes long) travelling time makes this a destination for the more adventurous traveller - but the untouched regions here are simply beautiful and definitely worth the effort to get to.

In Mozambique’s interior, although the government is making huge leaps in the process of repairing the damage wrought by its 20-year civil war, it’s still very early days for travellers. However, as with all the countries that we specialise in, we constantly monitor the situation and keep a look out for new properties that will satisfy the comfort-loving adventurer in all of us.

Best visited: April to December

All itineraries are individually designed, but as a guide, we can arrange ten days in Mozambique excluding flights from £4200 per person.

“Marlin for our Ollie on Christmas day could not have been a better surprise.”

Our relationships count for a lot and we still work with some of the same people we have worked with for twenty years. There is also constant change and the teams are always reviewing and adding to the experiences which they can offer and the lodges, hotels and guides they work with.

Rob Janisich

private tour guide Mozambique

Born and bred in South Africa, Rob’s love of all things wild started at a young age running around the estate of the country boarding school he attended in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands. After completing two degrees at university, Rob got his “bush-wings” working at the celebrated Mala Mala Game Reserve in South Africa’s Sabi-Sands region.  But it is in the past 5 years where Rob’s fantastic career as an inspirational guide has been most notable.  Specialising in the wildlife and birds of the newly re-emerging wilderness of Gorongosa National Park, Rob has worked during a renaissance in Mozambique and is proud to show you this pristine, unspoilt part of Africa.  At c+l we are thrilled to have had such a good relationship with Rob throughout his career and he takes extra care of our clients when in Mozambique. He has a reassuring confidence which makes your guided safari enthralling – he will have you and your children transfixed with his knowledge and passion for the wildlife of Gorongosa and of Africa as a whole.

This passion makes him focussed on making a difference to the world’s ‘Big Issues’.  Over the past 14 years Rob has worked to re-introduce big game into Mozambique’s parks, walking with black rhino in Zimbabwe’s Matusadona wilderness, climbing Niassa’s giant inselbergs, snorkelling with the cichlids in Lake Malawi, and learning to pole a mekoro in the Okavango Delta.  Nominated for 2 years running for the Good Safari Guide Awards’ “Best Personal Contribution to the African Safari Industry”, a safari with Rob will be totally unforgettable and his current playground of Gorongosa is an amazing place to discover in his company.

At c+l, we have no vested interest in the hotels and lodges which we select - we review everything and choose the best for a particular client. And because we visit our three regions on a regular basis and have details conversations with over 90% of our clients on their return, our choices can be refined continually. The choice of what is best for the client is our only consideration.

azura benguerra

Private beach hut Mozambique

If you close your eyes and picture ultimate luxury in sun-drenched paradise where every aspect of the surroundings is saturated with style, you would probably be imagining Azura Benguerra. Conde Nast Traveller Magazine writes, “Benguerra Island is becoming the hippest beach destination in Africa...". The beauty of the island is astounding: white sand stretches from the shores into a crystal blue lagoon, where the only colour comes from the exquisitely coloured fish. Every aspect of the surroundings is saturated with style: the luxurious villas are bright and private and you will dine by candlelight in a special, intimate part of the island each evening.

coral lodge

Family beach holiday Mozambique

Coral Lodge is an exceptional and magical place to explore the heart of Mozambique’s historical centre, Ilha de Moçambique and the indigenous tribesmen of the region, until recently isolated from the modern world that we know. It sets itself apart from so many beachside locations where an average day revolves around the sunbed and the bar and instead offers so much cultural history to learn about close by. However do not be deceived that Coral Lodge lacks in any way as a luxury retreat. Its bright and airy villas are secluded and idyllic and its facilities are those of a top resort. We love Coral Lodge for offering this unique combination.
