Central + South America

Gauchos, wine Estates, Colonial towns, chic beach resort, horse riding, relax

Relaxed and easygoing; intriguing and engaging – it’s hard to understand why Uruguay is overlooked by most travellers. Apart from the chic beach resort of Punta del Este (which South Americans consider to be their St Tropez), the country’s appeal is mostly subtle and low-key - but our experts can advise on how to get under its skin.

Kick back in the sleepy town of Carmelo, perhaps, near the pretty, colonial town of Colonia del Sacramento.

Or venture further afield on one of our private rides: staying in estancias and, escorted by gauchos, ride criollo horses through dunes, grasslands and along deserted Atlantic beaches.

Best visited: November to March

All itineraries are individually designed, but as a guide, we can arrange ten days in Uruguay (excluding flights) from £3500 per person.

“All in all I would not have changed anything. For a honeymoon it was perfect … It was such an amazing trip”

colonia deL sacramento

Colonia del Sacramento has an immense sense of history (this town changed hands ten times between 1680 and 1822). The historic quarter is a world heritage site, the streets are cobbled, the buildings are made out of local stone and the restaurants serve fabulous seafood.

jose ignacio

Only 30 minutes from Punta del Este but it feels a world away from the towering beach blocks. This is a sleepy town with dusty streets and friendly seafood restaurants. It is one of our favourite spots for a beach escape.

the first of many visits to montevideo

City trip to Uruguay

The first thing that struck Lucy Slater about Montevideo is how relaxed it is and how friendly the people are. Even though she had travelled to Uruguay before, she had never had the chance to spend time in city. A bit like a mini Buenos Aries, but without the congestion and buzz it gave her the chance to relax and really absorb her surroundings.

casa anna

rural retreat uganda

A short drive from the hip Jose Ignacio and you stumble across the sleepy village of Garzon, here you will find the beautifully decorated and utterly charming boutique hotel that is Casa Anna. This small hotel is the perfect place to relax, enjoy the peaceful countryside and feast on the incredible local food and wine. Built during the boom years of the 1920’s along with much of Garzon, you will gather a glimpse of a South American colonial town, oozing history.

playa vik

luxury beach hotel uruguay

Playa Vik’s opening in 2011 was exactly what we had been waiting for in Jose Ignacio, a contemporary upscale boutique beach hotel, oozing casual elegance and luxury, still the only one of its kind in the area. A remarkable private retreat which has combined exceptional design, an unrivalled location, sublime service and a stunning art collection. Playa Vik is perfect for guests who appreciate cutting edge art and architecture whilst enjoying the bohemian luxury which Jose Ignacio is renowned for.
