Central + South America

Colonial Cities, Inca Ruins, River Rafting, Trekking Machu Picchu, GLide ALONG the Amazon RIVer

Colonial cities, lakes, mountains, deserts, rainforest, ancient ruins and a rich culture combine to make Peru a microcosm of South America and a great introduction to its variety and appeal. While the cathedral city of Cuzco and the iconic Inca site of Machu Picchu should be included in any first-time itinerary, we always try to combine them with something more off the beaten track. (indeed, we even know how you can experience Machu Picchu without the crowds.)

Given Peru’s altitude, you’ll need expert advice to design a well-paced itinerary and, as with all of our destinations, the quality of your guides is absolutely key.

With the right advice and backup you can take a private trek to remote villages and ruins in the Sacred Valley; you can ride on horseback to visit the condors in the remote and spectacular Colca valley and also spend time on the magical islands of Lake Titicaca or in a remote Amazonian lodge.

Best visited: April to October

All itineraries are individually designed, but as a guide, we can arrange ten days in Peru (not including flights) from £3500 per person.

“It was absolutely everything that we could have asked for in terms of experiences, culture, guides and insight. The only real question is ... what next?”

colca valley

A timeless, terraced valley with a canyon twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, it has one of the best vantage points for viewing condor as they soar on the thermals above and below you. The quiet rural communities and their way of life has been virtually unchanged for centuries.

Cuzco is a beautiful city which is easy to explore on foot at the head of the Sacred Valley. It is one of the best reserved Spanish colonial cities in South America which is uniquely built on the pre-existing Inca city. And because it is so extensive, it is full of details and little secrets which it is a joy to discover with the knowledge and insight of an experienced guide.

Our relationships count for a lot and we still work with some of the same people we have worked with for twenty years. There is also constant change and the teams are always reviewing and adding to the experiences which they can offer and the lodges, hotels and guides they work with.

efrain valles

best city guide peru

Efrain is one of our absolute favourite guides in Peru. He has been guiding for about 14 years following on from a degree in tourism from Cuzco University. His main asset is his knowledge of the vast area surrounding Cuzco, every path and every trail is familiar to him. Due to this every villager you pass on your travels seems to know him and the passion he feels towards his job is obvious. This includes the history of his people and his dedication even led him to running the London Marathon dressed as an Inca Chaski.

private guide Machu Picchu

One of the challenges of guiding in Southern Peru is bringing the culture of the country alive away from the main tourist sites. That requires a natural feeling for the culture and an affinity with the real Peru. “Chino” as Ruben likes to be called taught Peruvian history at University but decided he preferred the great outdoors to the classroom. So, as well as having a deep understanding of the country he likes nothing more than to lead treks and travel to off the beaten track parts of his native country. Travelling with ‘Chino’ gives the best of all worlds: it is like having your own friendly professor along to show you round but with a sense of fun and a joy of the outdoors that brings rural Peru to life. With his ever present smile and wealth of knowledge, year after year he is one of our most popular guides.
A great skill, and particularly important in and around the Sacred Valley in high season, is getting to the main sites of historic interest when others are not there and by being flexible enough to work around the situation on the ground as you find it: Chino’s energy and ‘can do’ attitude means that he patently goes the extra mile to deliver experiences and find situations which less imaginative guides miss out on.

At c+l, we have no vested interest in the hotels and lodges which we select - we review everything and choose the best for a particular client. And because we visit our three regions on a regular basis and have details conversations with over 90% of our clients on their return, our choices can be refined continually. The choice of what is best for the client is our only consideration.

inkaterra machu picchu

Luxury hotel near Machu Pichu

Nestled in the cloud forest below the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu is a lovely sustainable hotel which is part of the well-known Inkaterra brand, also well-loved by us. The cottages are scattered throughout 12 acres of stunning grounds, connected by stone pathways, amidst waterfalls, hummingbirds and an orchid garden with 372 different native species. We personally don’t think it is worth the extra money to stay right next to the citadel of Machu Picchu and prefer this hotel, located just outside of Aguas Calientes for much more of an experience of the area as well as the famous ruins. It is a short bus ride to reach the Machu Piccu, however with the right guide, which we can provide, this is made remarkably easy.

sol y luna

Set in the heart of the Sacred Valley, five minutes outside the village of Urumbamba is Sol y Luna, is by far our longest standing favourite in the area. The beauty of the location is indescribable; enclosed by a red-walled courtyard surrounded by mountains and wonderfully colourful gardens, Sol y Luna was designed in order to promote the nature and magic of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The service is excellent and the food fantastic, with plenty to do during the days to keep you thoroughly entertained. Each bungalow has been designed to reflect the Andean culture and the Swiss French owners have achieved this to a fantastic degree.
