Ecologically Diverse, Free Spirited and Fun, andean coffee plantations, colonial cities, amazon nature

Why take a tailor-made holiday to Colombia? Colombia has some of the most diverse landscapes in the world, and it bears the crown for the largest number of ecosystems within one country. You can find yourself travelling to Caribbean islands, colonial cities, jagged coastal national parks, lush green hills, Amazon jungles, tropical grasslands and Andean coffee plantations.

Discover the birthplace of salsa in the West, the wonderful Amazon nature in the South, your own tropical paradise in the North and the stunning Sierra Nevada Mountain range in the North East overlooking fascinating fishing villages. As well as these rich landscapes there are also some incredible cities and Bogota, Cartagena and Medellin, in particular, will show you the Colombians' sense of fun, their pride in where they come from and their rhythm of life.

Accommodation in Colombia

There are so many up and coming boutique hotels that there is a place to please everyone, particularly in Cartagena. The owners are generally the stars who complete travellers' trips with their infectious enthusiasm, their drive to make their hotel different and having an eye for detail.

hummingbirds in colombia

It had been a lifelong ambition of Emily's to see hummingbirds in the wild. Not only because they are such fascinating and beautiful little creatures but also because their presence signifies that you are somewhere truly special and tropical. So when she discovered she was setting off to Colombia on a research trip she was extremely excited to explore the country but Colombia is also known to have the most species of hummingbirds in the world...

Our relationships count for a lot and we still work with some of the same people we have worked with for twenty years. There is also constant change and the teams are always reviewing and adding to the experiences which they can offer and the lodges, hotels and guides they work with.

Alexander Roderiguez

best tour guide Colombia

Alex has been guiding in Colombia for many years and he specialises mainly in the coffee region. He has a wealth of knowledge about his country and has a good understanding of its political, social and economic make up. He taught himself English by listening to the radio and never took a single formal English class, although you would never guess it from hearing him speak.

Like many of the best guides, he came to guiding as a second career and his insight into "normal life" is just as important as the cultural-historical facts which he has learned through traditional guiding. After completing his studies he joined the police force for a while and found himself working in the Anti-Narcotic division. However after this he decided a change of direction was needed and he made the decision to become a full time tourism guide to allow him to show visitors the wonders of Colombia, leaving you feeling totally in love with his country.  He is the sort of guide that you will end up wanting to take home with you.

At cazenove+loyd, we have no vested interest in the hotels and lodges which we select - we review everything and choose the best for a particular client. And because we visit our three regions on a regular basis and have detailed conversations with over 90% of our clients on their return, our choices can be refined continually. The choice of what is best for the client is our only consideration.

sofitel santa clara

Exclusive Hotels in Colombia

For a former 17th century convent, Sofitel Santa Clara in Cartagena is surprisingly cosy. Despite its colonial grandeur, the hotel has managed to balance traditional aesthetics with the all singing and all dancing amenities that are required of a luxury French super brand such as the Sofitel. It’s worth looking into categories starting at junior suites which are housed in the colonial section of the hotel, our favourite bit of the property. It even has a couple of resident toucans roaming about the internal tropical courtyard garden who will quite happily join you for breakfast (keep an eye on your freshly baked croissant). This is without doubt our favourite Sofitel hotel we have visited.
