AN EXTRAORDINAry variety of geography, volcanic islands, beautiful beaches, cultural experiences

With more than 18,000 islands scattered across nearly eight million square kilometres of tropical ocean, Indonesia embodies an extraordinary variety of geography and hundreds of distinct island cultures. Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi and Papua to name but a few - are all distinct island cultures and need to be approached in a very different way, with specialist advice on each.

As just one example, a road trip from Central Java to Bali is unforgettable: aptly nicknamed the ‘route of the volcanoes’ this intoxicating journey allows more adventurous travellers to experience unspoilt Indonesia, while still staying in extremely comfortable accommodation.

On Bali, a night at a Balinese Princess’s palace under the shadow of Agung volcano; a day with a personal shopper discovering the island’s most stylish sources of jewellery, fabrics and accessories (or a week sourcing fabulous furniture); a Hindu festival in a hideaway village – this is a side of Bali that few visitors see, confining themselves instead to the world-class resorts that dot its coastline and hill country.

Having travelled to Bali extensively and discovered how easy and rewarding it is to get off the beaten track, we encourage our clients to do so, too, and experience the real Bali with our cultural guide.

Best visited: April to October for popular Bali, further west the season gets shorter, further east the season gets longer

All itineraries are individually designed, but as a guide, we can arrange ten days in Indonesia (not including flights) from £2300 per person.

“Louise was extremely, extremely helpful – I would like everyone to know how great she was. I really developed a trust in her to understand my needs”

Crown Jewels

For over 20 years we have been creating the best luxury tailor-made holidays, we know our countries inside and out and really know how to get under the skin of each one and the best way to experience them.

Exploring borobudur

Even though built 1,200 years ago, the sheer scale of Borobudur is spectacular. It still looms impressively out of the rice paddies which make up the landscape around it. It is all the more special having survived being buried by volcanic ash and being blown up by terrorists in 1991.

driving across east java

The least densely populated and most scenically beautiful part of Java - you drive across a rolling landscape dotted with smoking volcanoes. It is well worth climbing Mount Bromo or the lesser climbed and more inaccessible Mount Ijen which is still ‘mined’ by hand for its sulphur.

east bali

East Bali is the least developed part of the island. You drive or walk through small villages and find a warmth in the people which is very genuine. One of our guides has access to a Royal Residence where you can have lunch with Mount Ajung as the backdrop.

relaxing on the beaches of lombok

Pristine empty beaches which just do not exist in Bali, Lombok is twenty years behind its more famous neighbour and all the better for it. It is also a great place for the more active: there is spectacular diving in the Gilis just off the coast as well as good trekking up Mount Rinjani. And at last some really lovely places to stay.

sailing around indonesia

One of the most amazing journeys you could possibly take, charter one of our many luxury boats which can sleep from 2-10 people. Venturing onto undiscovered islands, catching a glimpse of the komodo dragons, hiking up volcanoes, diving/snorkelling amongst pristine marine environments all without another tourist in sight.

Get Under the skin of ubud, bali

Surrounded by a lush landscape of hills and rice paddies, Ubud has always been home to many of Bali’s best artists and artisans. It now has a thriving restaurant/cafe scene and good shops, so offers a real alternative to the bigger beach resorts which hug the coast. It also has some of Bali’s best small hotels in the stunning countryside just outside the town.

Catching the surf in nihiwatu

Surfing doesn't come naturally to everyone, and if you have never attempted it before it can be a terrifying experience. With the help of her personal instructor, Jenny Wilkinson clambered on her board, and embraced the waves off the Indonesian coast.

Our relationships count for a lot and we still work with some of the same people we have worked with for twenty years. There is also constant change and the teams are always reviewing and adding to the experiences which they can offer and the lodges, hotels and guides they work with.

surfing instructor

indonesia family adventure trip

Nihiwatu Island has some of the most exhilarating surfing in Indonesia. It also has our favourite surf instructor – Christian. We always recommend him to clients wanting to surf on holiday - whether pro or beginner. Apart from providing endless entertainment, he knows all the best places to go, when to go, and is a great teacher for beginners.
If you are a pro surfer Christian will take you 100 yards off Nihiwatu beach where you can find the perfect wave for some unrivalled down-the-line surfing. Whilst always making sure that conditions are safe, Christian likes to push people so that they get the most out of the experience. Having worked with children for years he is also a wonderful teacher with the young, and can take family lessons as well.
A wonderful multi-tasker, Christian also loves horse riding and  should you tire of the water sports, a spot of horse riding along the beach and through the dense jungle is a special way to explore this tribal island.

tribal guide

private guided tour indonesia

Patti isn’t a standard guide – when we met her for the first time 10 years ago we knew she was different. She isn’t originally from Indonesia (she is American-born) but she has taken on the culture of her adopted nation with a fervent passion, making her one of the most “Indonesian” people we have come across.  She has been accepted by many local ethnic communities, including the Asmat and Dani tribes who she has previously worked with. Patti has also discovered distant islands where she has made first contact with tribes and since taken our clients to these timeless places.
Exploring Indonesia with Patti is great because as someone who has learnt their culture from scratch herself, she has a knack of pinpointing the information which will most interest and impress visitors intrigued in the local culture. She has also taken some of our clients to meet tribesmen, who treat guests with respect (and vice versa) since they know and trust Patti – this is a very special experience which we highly recommend.
Along with a team of village boat builders Patti constructed two incredible Phinisi-style ships which are incredible for exploring unchartered waters – especially involving if travelling as a family or as a group of friends.

At c+l, we have no vested interest in the hotels and lodges which we select - we review everything and choose the best for a particular client. And because we visit our three regions on a regular basis and have detailed conversations with over 90% of our clients on their return, our choices can be refined continually. The choice of what is best for the client is our only consideration.

alila purnama

luxury boat experience Indonesia

Alila Purnama is one of our first choices when it comes to boating experiences in Indonesia. Built in the style of a traditional Phinisi ship it is sleek, ultra-modern, incredibly stylish and extremely luxurious. In our opinion it is the best way to enjoy the untouched turquoise waters of the Indonesian islands, especially for those looking to sample some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world or visit local tribal islands for a more cultural experience.

Luxury rural hotel Java

Amanjiwo is a wonderful hotel to enjoy the incredible views over the rural heartland of Central Java, away from the bustling capital of Jakarta. Lush green rolling hills, jutting volcanoes and centuries-old Javanese monuments are just some of the sights visible from the hotel. The most outstanding thing about Amanjiwo, though, is its position next to the breath-taking Borobudur temple, and we recommend that all our clients visit at sunrise to catch it at its most beautiful

luxury beach hotel Maya Island Indonesia

Amanwana, on Moyo Island is one of our favourite destinations. It is an island paradise; an isolated cluster of luxurious tents set out under a canopy of tropical trees. Guests wake to the sound of bird call, and can stroll out of their tent to the incredible sights and sounds of the jungle. The diving and snorkelling in the indigo waters is some of the best in Indonesia and is the only resort on the island of Moyo due to the wildlife reserve on the island.

tugu hotel lombok

luxury beach hotel Lombok Indonesia

What we love about Tugu Lombok is its individuality – filled with beautiful one-off antiques and artwork giving it a quirky and unique style. The hotel is steeped in local history and the staff are interested and eager to share their knowledge with guests. We have known the general manager for years and know how dedicated the staff are to creating a special experience for their guests, which is exactly why we can highly recommend the hotel to our clients.
