Destination Expert | Central+South America

I have always sought to go further than the conventional experience of travelling, wanting to fully engage with both the people and the language. A degree in Spanish enabled me to spend a year living and working in Spain and is one of the numerous reasons why I am so drawn to Latin America. There are few things more thrilling than being able to converse with a local in their own language and it’s the perfect way to unlock the secrets of travel. I have been lucky enough to have travelled extensively; from trekking through the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, to volunteering for a charity that rescues street children in Bolivia. I feel incredibly fortunate that my role within the Latin American division is enabling me to visit more inspirational and exciting places.

Longing to return to…

During my trip to Bolivia, I sadly didn’t have enough time to travel south to visit the Salt Flats of Uyuni. The Salt Flats are a must-see in Latin America and I’m desperate to return to see them.

My next destination…

Guatemala; a country of vibrant colours, warm people, and incredible cultural richness. Arguably the most exciting and adventurous country in Central America.

What's your most memorable experience?

Undoubtedly my time volunteering for a charity called Alalay that rescues children from the streets in Bolivia. At Alalay, the children are able to ‘grow back down’ and enjoy their childhood away from the appalling conditions from which they had come. It was such a valuable experience and a total privilege to be able to make a small contribution to the lives of these children.

Your best piece of travel advice?

To just say yes. Grab hold of every opportunity that presents itself and say yes. There’s nothing worse than returning from a trip with the feeling of regret that you let a once in a life time opportunity pass you by.

The hotel I’d most like to go to

Aguas Arriba in Argentina. Located on the stunning Lago del Desierto, there’s no Wi-Fi, no phone signal and no television so this really is the perfect place to wind-down. You have the option of guided hikes every day, or simply staying in and relaxing by the fire with a really good book.

Three of My Favourite Places

Adventure at every turn

Bolivia is quite unique in the fact that it is still very unspoiled. It is the perfect country for those who seek adventure. Highlights for me included wandering around the authentic markets of La Paz and bartering for woollen clothing, as well as exploring the fascinating mining city of Potosí.

South Africa

First Time Safari

There’s nothing quite like experiencing a safari for the first time and South Africa has some of the world’s best game-viewing. Driving down the Garden Route and exploring South Africa’s stunning coastline was also a highlight, as was visiting a friend in Cape Town and sitting and enjoying the view of Table Mountain from her garden.

The perfect weekend

It still baffles me that Morocco is such a short flight away from the UK, yet its culture could not be more different. There is something for everyone; whether it be wandering around the souks in Marrakech, or riding a camel through the Atlas Mountains. Kasbah Tamadot is stunning and perfect for a relaxing long-weekend away.
