Central + South America

Central and South America is a complex region full of noteworthy discoveries yet full of traps for the uninitiated.

From a horseback riding adventure in Argentina to a luxury beach vacation in Rio, it’s impossible to plan a luxury vacation in South America without inside knowledge: every country and every part of that country have little secrets, which only an insider can know or anticipate.

We are specialists at designing private luxury travel in Central and South America. Our Destination Experts spend a large amount of their time talking to guides and people in their region. They are always learning and discovering new secrets which they can pass on to you. As in other parts of the world Central and South America continues to change with new travel opportunities arising. For example, we have recently added Cuba and Colombia to our destinations.

Destinations

Botafogo bay - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Brazil

For us Brazil is one of the most exciting and frustrating destinations in South America. We know from personal experience how every area of Brazil offers something truly unique but no one client can do everything in one trip and we advise to not to try and cover too much. Doing a few things well is the key to a great experience. Part of Brazil’s charm is the spontaneity and exuberance of Brazilians – they do things their way and we ‘gringos’ need to go with the rhythm to get the most of the country.

luxury-holiday-antarctica

Antarctica

There are few more extraordinary ‘deserts’ on Earth than the big white one which is Antarctica. Breathtaking mountains, glaciers and fjords; astonishing colors and sounds; unique wildlife, such as the Emperor Penguin and leopard seal, as well as research stations and historical points of interest – the White Continent offers an awe-inspiring, once in a lifetime experience.

luxury tailor-made travel to Argentina

Argentina

One of South America’s most exciting destinations. We’ve spent many wonderful years digging out hidden treasures in this beautiful country and discovering ways to find a real adventure without sacrificing on comfort. This is a land of rainforests, wetlands, lakes, volcanoes, mountains, vibrant cities, polo+ tango. Argentina is full of adventure and perfect for an extraordinary holiday.

luxury-trip-belieze

Belize

Famous for its diving, the natural beauty of its Caribbean beaches and The Cayes a group of small islands just off the coast, cazenove+loyd have been working in Belize for almost 15 years. For those who are looking for culture and adventure, Belize can combine well with either Guatemala or Mexico. We can arrange a great road trip from the remote, jungle-clad Mayan ruins of the Yucatan across the border to small jungle and mountain-top lodges and laid-back beach retreats which allow you to enjoy the natural beauty of one of the smallest countries in Central America.

tailor-made travel to Bolivia

Bolivia

As with everything we do at c+l, the management of expectations is paramount in delivering the right vacation for each client. Bolivia is a remarkable country – an adventure destination in itself or combined with a trip to neighboring Peru or Chile. The big proviso is the word ‘adventure’: the high Altiplano and harsh climate which make for such spectacular light and extraordinary scenery also mean that the infrastructure and lodges are not in the same league as more ‘developed’ parts of South America.

luxury travel to Chile

Chile

The extreme North and the extreme South of the country represent landscapes on steroids. Moreover, in the last few years Chile has developed some ground-breaking small lodges in its most remote areas. So, for the cazenove+loyd client who wants to experience the raw outdoors but with the reassurance of a pampered and stylish indoors, Chile delivers for all of the senses. The country also has a very efficient infrastructure which means you can cover long distances in a relatively short time.

luxury-holiday-colombia

Colombia

Colombia has some of the best colonial architecture in the Americas and Cartagena is to many minds the ultimate. With a pace of life all of its own, we usually plan a few days at the end of a trip to enjoy this coastal gem and some use it as base from which to explore the beaches to its North and South by boat. Cartegena is undoubtedly the star of the show but the unspoiled countryside and the low-key owner-run converted farmhouses mean that you can enjoy most of the country without seeing any mainstream tourism en route.

luxury-trip-costa-rica

Costa Rica

One of the safest and most family-friendly destinations in the world, it has largely avoided mass tourism and offers small lodges with access to unspoiled beaches and pristine natural parks. And for bird watchers and nature lovers it is up there in the top ten. With repeated rave feedback, particularly from families, we appreciate how special Costa Rica is. For those who want to fly between locations there is a great network of charter flights. Alternatively a good way to see the countryside is to be driven on one of our tailor-made routes.

luxury-guided-tour-cuba

Cuba

The appeal of Cuba is its unique history and culture untouched by the outside world for decades. High-end luxury is not on offer here, but the charm of a country so completely trapped in time by an enigmatic social and political regime makes up for this. As our newest destination we have fallen for
Cuba’s cultural quirkiness, the stunning landscape of the Escambray Mountains, the friendly people and their ceaseless salsa dancing. We are able to arrange all entry requirements for US citizens.

Cotopaxi, an active volcano, at sunset with horses in the foreground

Ecuador

Most visitors barely touch mainland Ecuador as they rush for the wildlife mecca of the Galapagos. Those yearning for the Andes, tend to overlook the the Ecuadorean Sierra focusing instead on the Inca culture in the Peruvian Andes. The Northern and Southern Sierras are pristine for walking and riding with charming haciendas from which you can explore farms, markets and mountains. For cities, colonial Quito and Cuenca are as charming and unspoiled as they have ever been with the advantage of some new and comfortable accommodation.

luxury-holiday-guatemala

Guatemala

At c+l we have long supported Mexico as one of the most diverse and interesting countries in the Americas. Guatemala is the Mexico of 50 years ago. Less sophisticated than its bigger and more celebrated neighbor but for those who want a more simple lodge and hotel some of its Mayan ruins are even more enigmatic and dramatic than those in Mexico. On the coast we tend to combine Guatemala with Belize, but for pure and unspoiled Central American culture, there is nowhere which comes close.

luxury itinerary ideas mexico beach and culture

Mexico

It is difficult to beat the wild stretches of Mexico’s Pacific Coast for sheer beauty and the hotels along the Caribbean Mayan Riviera are world class. However these are far from the real Mexico. We can organize a beach vacation in Mexico as well as anyone (better actually as we only work with a small number of the very best hotels and private houses), but what really gets us excited is planning trips to the colonial cities surrounding Mexico City or to the Mayan ruins and unspoiled towns of southern Mexico or the interior of the Yucatan Peninsula.

luxury-guided-tour-panama

Panama

Navigating through the Panama Canal in a cargo vessel or having lunch atop this feat of engineering is a ‘must do’ when visiting this destination. Panama City has contrasting sleek skyscrapers with a UNESCO World Heritage site of colonial architecture. The rest of the country shares diverse indigenous cultures, incredible highlands, clusters of Caribbean islands and wild rainforests. Let us help you discover this unspoiled and largely undiscovered country.

Llama in front of ancient inca town of Machu Picchu

Peru

Most visitors miss out on the incredible variety of Peru due to the inevitable draw of Machu Picchu. So fixed are other travel companies on the ‘well-trodden’ path that they do not include the lesser known parts. Peru was the first South American country which we developed in a unique c+l way. Experience treks which others do not know, private access to museums, leisurely lunches in unusual locations, Amazon expeditions with world-class naturalist guides and the real inside track. Our network of contacts makes pretty much anything possible.

luxury-guided-tour-galapagos

The Galapagos

For guaranteed wildlife up close, there is no match for the innocent, trusting animals which make up the ecosystem of the Galapagos. cazenove+loyd has always taken a strong stand on only working with smaller boats which operate at the highest level in this sensitive area. Their guides know how best to engage with you for the long term benefit of the archipelago. We have good relationships there which end up making your experience all the fuller and more memorable. There are now a couple of lodges/camps for those who prefer to explore from land.

luxury travel to turks and caicos

Turks + Caicos Islands

It’s easy to see why the Turks+Caicos Islands are the main Caribbean destination that we cover. With about 128 square miles of beautiful flat white beaches this is a truly relaxing getaway. And because they are flat, weather patterns tend to pass straight over leaving them generally dry and sunny all year round. The extensive mangroves add another dimension if you want to be more active with some stand up paddle boarding or biking and of course, there is an endless list of water sports we can arrange. Some of the most luxurious and exclusive hotels in our portfolio are here.

luxury holiday to Uruguay

Uruguay

The chic areas of Jose Ignacio, Barra and Garzon near the coastal city of Punta del Este are Uruguay’s main attraction. In the winter months this region becomes a mecca for the glitzy set from Argentina, Brazil, Europe and the United States. An incredible selection of hotels, restaurants and bars have sprung up setting a high standard.
However, the rest of Uruguay should not be overlooked and being roughly the size of Florida it can be easily navigated. Rugged beaches, lush wetlands and traditional estancias serving delectable steaks and incredible wine are all available.
