Flooded with Life

The Pantanal is a tropical wetland that lies predominately within the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, extending into Mato Grosso and creeps across the borders into Paraguay and Bolivia. During the wet season the rain runs off the uplands flooding the Pantanal. Lucia writes that there is an astonishing number of eco systems, 12 of which have been defined. If you have a passion for wildlife then the biologically diverse collection of plants and animals will not disappoint.
During the journey, Lucia stayed at two farms; Fazenda Barranco Alto and Barra Mansa which are right in the centre of the Pantanal, and experienced the day to day living of the authentic Pantaneiros (cowboy of the Pantanal). Both accommodations are simple and Lucia points out that those who think the lodges in Africa have become too luxurious, then they would love it here. For those who prefer a bit more comfort, Lucia recommends staying at the Caiman Lodge, which although not as remote as the previous places is still surrounded by enough wildlife to keep you occupied.
There is plenty to do here, canoeing, riding, fishing, swimming to name a few but the main attraction is the wildlife; giant anaconda, howler monkeys, capybaras, jaguar, giant otters, and of course the birds; hyacinth macaws, toucans, kingfishers and many more...
