For those who like a bit of adventure on their holiday, you cannot go far wrong when you visit Botswana. Ciara Parkes travelled as a guest of cazenove+loyd and talks about her bespoke trip to the region, she was totally enamoured with the varied adventures and experiences along the way.
Ciara's first stop was Camp Kalahari, the sister lodge of Jack's Camp. No sooner had they arrived at the lodge they were whisked away on a three day tailored riding safari with David Foot, their riding guru and guide. The landscape of the salt pans of the Makgadikgadi is vast and wondrous. In the summer the pans are alive with an explosion of wildlife; zebra, wildebeest and flamingos to name but a few.
After the riding safari, Ciara moved on to Jack's Camp, a tented camp slap bang in the middle of the bush. The following days were spent learning to track, stalk and survive in the wilds before venturing out on quad bikes one evening, watching the sun set and the blanket of stars arrive in its place. Every day was another adventure, from finding a colony of wild meerkats and being accepted as one of their own to experiencing a herd of young bull elephants proving themselves by destroying a thicket of palms.
The last part of the trip proved to be the most action packed. Leaving Jack's Camp, always a difficult thing to do as the staff and guides are particularly exceptional, Ciara took a short plane ride to the Selinda Spillway which is part of the Okavango Delta. The next days were spent canoeing down the Spillway spotting wildlife, particularly elephants, impala and hippos. They watched a herd of elephants socialising in the shallows, a truly phenomenal sight. It is on the canoe trip that Ciara has not one but two close encounters with hippos. It was like something from an action movie and their guide played the part of the hero. Ciara described the whole trip and experience as "...an extraordinary trip. A true life-affirming adventure that will remain with me always..."
