Argentina

Sophie Campbell visited the North West of Argentina and the rugged province of Salta.  The highlight of the trip was a trek in the mountains above the Iruya Valley.

Iruya is one of those places that makes Argentines sentimental. ‘Iruya!' they coo. ‘Es lindisimo, es super-bonito!' They hitched there during university vacations and stayed on floors for a peso a night, or did school field trips to study the bone-dry, multicoloured rock landscapes of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, once an Inca road, now a Unesco world heritage site.

Some, like Sophie's guides Luis and Maru, couldn't stop coming back and now lead treks through the valleys and over the high (4000 metre-plus) passes taking in not just the scenery and the views but the lively conversation and timeless village life of the remote communities that you pass en route.
