Botswana: face to face with the lion king in the Central Kalahari

Since the introduction of Kalaharis Plains Camp (run by Wilderness Safaris), visitors can now comfortably reach the centre hub of wildlife in 15 minutes which can also provide a large amount of time to track other wildlife species such as desert lions and other predators shortly after dawn.
The camp is exclusive in its kind with a maximum of 14 guests allowed at one time in its 7 tents, allowing for a more intimate, personal experience with the animals and surrounding wilderness.
Brian's guide, Matt Copham, was raised in South Africa, had worked in Botswana for the previous 8 years and was fully aware of the Kalahari. With golden orb spider webs shining in the strong morning sun, goshawks with pink shanks glaring from every tree, wild flowers and monarch butterflies, it became clear that Central Kalahari was no ordinary desert. Sands and fossil dunes were even tucked underneath the grass and shrub which Brian flawlessly pointed out.
The highly-anticipated rain falls between December to March transformed the whole Kalahari into a blossoming habitat with the heart of its coverage being in Deception Valley. Where before, the valley would flow into the world's 'biggest' lake, today, desert conditions are noticeable with savannah sweeping the region for 50 miles. When it rains, the region attracts even more species to the area: gemsbok, springbok, lions, cheetahs, jackals and hyenas.
It is noticeable to see that predators patrol the valley margins, and in particular, where the 'Lion King' is to be found; a huge lion worth 10 lions anywhere else! What a creature who, as Matt explained in January, killed one cheetah in January and killed a brown hyena - he really is the king of this palace.
Deception Valley is magical - so many animals on offer, with the green season in particular making this region in Botswana one of the most hallowed places to be found in wild Africa.
