Magical Zanzibar

Publication: Harper's Bazaar
Date: June 14, 2011
Author: Raffaella Barker

Relax in luxurious surrounds in Zanzibar, a group of islands off the coast of Tanzania. The port of Stone Town still contain unique remenants of Zanzibar's telling past from the strong tide that destroyed some key pieces of its landscape, a true eyesore to see crumbled buildings, rusted ironwork balconies, and so on. Stone Town's architecture reflects the diversity of colonial rulers in its doors and fabrics. The 236 Hurumzi hotel here enables you to breathe sumptuous fragrances of jasmine with spices cooking - what a delight!

A romantic retreat, Zanzibar proudly provides enjoyment for each need: dhow fishing, creole cooking as well as the chance to unwind under Africa's deep sunset - there's something for everyone. You can also admire Zanzibar's paradise by plane with its crystalised waters, warm sandy beaches and spicy plantations observable from above. As nightfall beckons, the water turns a darker shade before vanishing in the midst of darkness.

The coastline has become increasingly inundated by hotels - a landscape that has gradually evolved into one that embodies the intriguing characteristics of Africa: beauty, character and history.  When in Zanzibar, why not stay in 'Residence'; with each of its 66 villas having a private pool? Or Baraza, a resort influenced by Sultan of Oman's palaces? The gold-exterior design coupled with the service reflect Moorish-inspired design. Kilindi is also a magical hotspot offering an intimate boutique feel on a tiny private beach.
