Africa + Indian Ocean

A fantastic choice for first-time safari-goers and seasoned travellers alike

Kenya is almost a microcosm of Africa, with its incredible array of landscapes and abundant wildlife. From the migratory herds of the Masai Mara, to the dense tropical rainforest, the North Frontier’s rugged mountain terrain, and the sugar-white beaches that fringe the Indian Ocean, its richness and diversity will satisfy any traveller.

Kenya is also leading the way in responsible tourism and many of the Kenyan safari lodges and camps are now heavily involved with community projects. Developed by safari operators in conjunction with the local tribes, this admirable relationship is designed to preserve the country’s natural resources, while delivering real and lasting benefit to the tribal communities.

All of cazenove+loyd’s safari and wildlife holidays in Kenya are based around conservation, as without responsible tourism the projects that protect animals and their habitat simply would not and could not exist. Our contacts on the ground mean that clients can gain a real insight into these essential and moving projects.

The carefully sought out, owner-run safari camps that we select for our clients are set in spectacular areas of Kenya, offering an authentic, ecologically and socially responsible, highly comfortable and, above all, deeply memorable, safari experience.

    Getting there

Only an 8-hour flight from Europe and without the drag of jet-lag, a safari in Kenya is a great choice for those with a shorter amount of time. For families, February half-term is a fantastic time due to the more favourable rates and higher levels of availability.

Encountering big cats in the wild is undoubtedly one of the most exciting wildlife experiences out there. And where better to see their captivating behaviour and pride dynamics than in Kenya’s magnificent Masai Mara National Reserve?
As ever on safari, I was awoken by one of the camp porters at around 7am for my breakfast. I was staying at Alex Walker's Serian Camp in Mara North Conservancy.
A family holiday in Kenya can throw up so many options in terms of bonding. Many of the camps will offer a nights ‘fly camping’ which basically means sleeping wild, with nothing but a fly sheet between you and the stars. Tales are often relayed by the guide around a campfire before you bed down for the night, after a hearty meal which has been cooked and served up right there in front of you.
Leaving a cold, wet, London in search of some African sun was a very exciting prospect. I was due to spend three days in and around Laikipia, Lewa and Borana before flying south to the Mara for another three days, to see out the end of my trip.
In all of the regions in which we work throughout the world, securing the most inspiring guides is our highest priority. Below we have highlighted some of our favourites, who we have known for years and who embody the qualities we look for when choosing a guide for our clients.
Nature’s cycles and rhythms can vary dramatically depending on when you travel and nowhere is this more apparent than in Africa. Our Destination Experts, who have lived, worked and travelled extensively around Africa, can advise you where to go when.
When most think of safaris, they think game-drives. But in addition to those thrilling drives, there are so many other incredible ways to experience Africa. Here are just a handful of the awe-inspiring experiences we can arrange in Africa.
