    Gorilla Rwanda

    For an emotionally-stirring experience...

With its jungle-smothered volcanoes, hills and valleys covered in a dense patchwork of banana, maize and tea plantations and wealth of lakes and rivers, Rwanda overflows with tropical lushness.

Rwanda is home to the mighty mountain gorilla in the Parc National des Volcans and trekking to see these magnificent creatures is a hugely emotionally stirring experience. The country is also teeming with birdlife in the magnificent rainforests of Nyungwe, as well as wide-open plains with a completely different ecosystem.

Now well into the healing process since the genocide of 1994, Rwanda’s people have created a remarkable museum to commemorate the tragic events, which is a deeply moving and very worthwhile experience. In the capital, Kigali, and other towns, a raft of new places to stay, eat, drink and dance have created a real buzz – enhanced by the Rwandans’ great love of life.

This enthusiasm is evidenced by ‘Umuganda’,  a ritual which takes place once a month, where Rwandans spend the morning cleaning, building and helping each other. Visitors are more than welcome to pitch in with this life-affirming effort.

I spent a thrilling hour with a family of mountain gorillas in the Parc National des Volcans in Rwanda. Exuberant bright eyed youngsters roughhousing around the placid adults, while in the corner, half under a bush, a huge silver back gorilla lay on his tummy, cradling his tiny newborn in one hand while grooming it tenderly with the other.

Rwanda is a captivating destination. Often described as the Land of a Thousand Hills, its spectacular landscapes include open plains, tea and coffee plantations and forested volcanoes that are home to more than a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas and now the Big Five.
When most think of safaris, they think game-drives. But in addition to those thrilling drives, there are so many other incredible ways to experience Africa. Here are just a handful of the awe-inspiring experiences we can arrange in Africa.

I travelled to Rwanda with Alby Shale who was in the midst of an incredible project, to build Rwanda’s first International Cricket Stadium. After spending a few days exploring the capital Kigali and visiting the cricket ground site we made our way out of the city to start our journey: to cycle from the outskirts of Kigali into Uganda.
During my trip to Uganda, I ticked off an experience that has been at the top of my bucket list since watching Gorillas In The Mist. I got to see the mountain gorillas. Words can’t describe the feeling that rushed through me when I first locked eyes with a giant silverback.
