Our Experience at Latitude 10: an eco-paradise in Costa Rica
I knew before I had even arrived at Latitude 10 that it would be my kind of place. It had been described to me on various occasions as ‘unfussy luxury’ – and that really does sum it up.
Latitude 10 (or just Latitude as it is known amongst those who know and love it) was exactly what I hoped it would be from the moment I arrived. I was greeted at the gate by two Costa Rican pooches and I instantly felt at home. That’s what Latitude 10 is all about – feeling at home. With only six rooms, there is a relaxed family vibe that runs throughout the hotel. You also really get to know the staff, and they get to know you. They were there to help with anything and everything I needed, whether it was organising a private surf lesson with their expert guide, Mauricio or even just a refreshing early evening G&T.
The hotel is genuinely eco-friendly, and one thing that struck me is their ‘five-minute beach clean-up’ initiative. Guests can take a reusable bag from the hotel, head out onto the beach and search for rubbish. If they come back with something, they are given a complimentary smoothie, beer, or glass of wine. Not only are guests able to get involved with protecting the local area, but they are rewarded for it too. Never did I think, nor would I have believed, that I’d spend my days on the beach searching for rubbish rather than sunbathing, but that’s the wonderful thing about Latitude.
Latitude 10 isn’t for everyone, but it doesn’t pretend to be either. With only outdoor bathrooms, and rooms with shutters rather than doors, you must be prepared to constantly be surrounded by nature. And by nature, I mean bugs! You can also spot iguanas, monkeys, and all sorts of birds from the comfort of your sun lounger, feeling that intense thrill of observing the layered ecosystem in action.
Latitude 10 is understated yet luxurious, and for me it was heaven.
