Our Stay at Copal Tree Lodge, Belize
Many people understandably associate Belize solely with beautiful Caribbean beaches and fantastic snorkelling, but the truth is, it has so much more to offer. Copal Tree Lodge (formerly Belcampo) is a great example of this.
The lodge got it right from the moment they picked me up from the airport. Their open-air safari type vehicle was a sign of great things to come. Arriving at Copal Tree Lodge, which is located in a 12,000-acre nature reserve, I could instantly tell that the remoteness would give real scope for adventure and excellent wildlife. However, despite the remote location, there is absolutely no sacrificing on comfort, and the suites at Copal Tree Lodge (I was in a Jungle Suite) are incredibly elegant. The food is exquisite, as are their pink gin & tonics!
Unbelievably, a highlight of my stay at Copal Tree Lodge was my daily shower, which had a floor-to-ceiling view of the jungle. Never did I think I’d be showering and looking at howler monkeys at the same time. My suite also had a truly comfortable hammock on the terrace, with a 360-degree view of the jungle, so there really wasn’t any escaping those monkeys.
I found myself in a bit of a predicament whilst staying at the lodge. I was desperate to relax and enjoy the facilities (the pool is gorgeous) yet didn’t want to miss out on all the activities they have on offer. In the end I decided to spend the morning canoeing down the Rio Grande River, and the afternoon by the pool. How I wish I could have stayed longer.
What struck me the most about Copal Tree Lodge is the fact that clearly so much thought has gone in to every single aspect of the hotel, from the stylish suites, to the organic farm where they produce on-site more than 70% of the food they serve. It really is such a special place and will forever be one of my favourite hotels in the world.
