Where best to visit in Africa during the early summer months
ZAMBIA AND TANZANIA
Securing a safari in the early summer months can feel like you’ve been let in on a brilliant secret. At this time of year, many camps are newly reopened and are looking their best, having been refreshed and refurbished during the off-season. Safaris are undeniably expensive, but travelling outside of the school holidays means much more favourable rates.
In Tanzania, early summer offers a chance to see the legendary migration in the Serengeti before the busy summer season sets in. All of our favourite guides tell us that this is their favourite time to visit the Serengeti as the ‘endless plains’ become just that, with few other vehicles around. The magnificent Ngorongoro Crater is also incredibly lush at this time of year, with beautiful, dramatic skies creating a visual feast.
Meanwhile in Zambia, canoeing down certain stretches of the Zambezi in early summer feels like you have come across something totally undiscovered, with its quiet surroundings, lush scenery and enchanting birdlife. At this time of year the game is abundant, but other visitors certainly aren’t, so it is achievable to get a genuine bush experience without having to go completely off-the-grid.
