Peru and Northern Chile

Early summer in Peru comes after the end of the rainy season so the valleys are particularly lush and fertile. Southern Peru, particularly around Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, can be very busy in the peak summer months of July and August. We can always work around this to ensure a crowd-free experience and have devised some great trekking away from the regulated Inca Trail, but travelling earlier in the summer certainly means that the country is less crowded and the rates are more favourable.

The rest of Peru is just as beautiful at this time of year; the Amazon’s dry season runs from June and is the best time for exploring the rainforest. Meanwhile, the capital city Lima is an intoxicating mix of European and South American culture, with old colonial buildings next to towering skyscrapers and a renowned food scene.

May and June are also fantastic times to explore Northern Chile. Experience the otherworldly landscapes and startingly starry skies of the Atacama desert where we can organise sand-boarding and dune-buggying, all while staying in one of Latin America’s finest lodges in the charming desert town of San Pedro.

For those with more time and an adventurous inclination, San Pedro is also the starting point for a great overland border crossing road trip into Bolivia. This journey takes in the altiplano and the moon-like salt pans of Uyuni and we have expert guides and 4Ã_4’s which allow you to travel in great comfort.
