Why Costa Rica Makes a Fantastic Family Holiday
Costa Rica is the perfect destination for families who like adventure and keeping active whilst on holiday. There are a huge number of adventurous activities to keep your children entertained; from zip-lining through stunning canyons, to stand-up paddle boarding on calms coast lines. A highlight for me was white-water rafting* in and out of the stunning jungle hideaway Pacuare Lodge. The journey in was a gentle introduction to rafting (grades 1 and 2 on the international scale of river difficulty), whereas the rafting out (grades 3 and 4) certainly got my adrenaline pumping, especially as our fun-loving guide kept pretending to fall in. What an incredible way to arrive at and leave a lodge, and one that your family will be sure to never forget.
*please kindly note that the white-water rafting in and out of Pacuare Lodge requires a minimum age of 12.
Costa Rica is incredibly biodiverse, and wildlife can be spotted all over the country. In fact, the country is home to more than 5% of the world’s biodiversity, despite the only taking up 0.03% of the Earth’s surface. From monkeys and sloths, to birds and frogs - you name it, Costa Rica has it. A standout moment for me, and undoubtedly one of the most incredible wildlife encounters of my life, was spending the morning dolphin spotting in the Golfo Dulce. I naively thought that we’d most likely spend most of the morning searching for dolphins and would be lucky to spot one or two if we were lucky. Little did I know that we’d come across a school of over a hundred dolphins, many of which were following our boat, and jumping up within feet from us. That is just one snapshot of the incredible wildlife that Costa Rica has to offer.
Costa Ricans are amongst the happiest people I have ever come across. I was totally struck by their positive outlook on life; they are constantly laughing and joking and are a total joy to spend time with. It’s unusual, and quite remarkable, to find a group of people who enjoy using sarcasm as much as the British do, but the Costa Ricans almost do! Costa Rica was once voted one of the happiest countries to live (and is still considered the happiest place to live in Latin America) and this really is reflected in its people. Their national motto is ‘Pura Vida’ (loosely translated as ‘life is good’) and this echoes just how happy and fulfilled they are. Our hand-picked guides are no exception and will ensure that there is a never a dull moment for you and your family.
