Why we recommend experiencing the Galapagos by boat
Before my trip to the Galapagos, I thought I knew exactly what to expect. However, the truth is, nothing will prepare you for the truly incredible experience that is a trip to the Galapagos Islands.
I am a strong believer that the best way to see the Galapagos is by boat. This way, most of the navigating happens either at night or during meal times, meaning you have maximum time to visit the many different islands, and to enjoy the vast array of flora and fauna that each one has to offer. At c+l, we work with a handful of small boats that have been handpicked over the years, and I was lucky enough to spend four nights on one them.
Each boat is carefully selected based on many different factors, with the guide to passenger ratio being the most crucial. I experienced first-hand that with smaller guiding groups, you have more of an opportunity to learn from your guide, not only about the flora and fauna, but about the conservation of the islands too.
What struck me the most about the Galapagos is the fact that the wildlife there is not at all intimidated by us. I haven’t experienced this anywhere else in the world and it is undoubtedly the main reason as to why my trip to the Galapagos was unforgettable.
I went snorkelling with sharks, stingrays, penguins, sea lions and turtles all within a few days, and all of them were happy for us to get within feet from them. A moment that stood out above most others was a morning we spent snorkelling with a group of sea lions. There was one sea lion in particular who was not only not afraid of us, but in fact was desperate to play with us. We spent almost an hour swimming along, with said sea lion doing laps around us and coming within centimetres from our underwater cameras. It was an incredible experience, and that hour-long friendship was an incredibly special one!
I personally believe that the Galapagos is the best place in the world for interacting with wildlife, and this combined with a first-class boat experience, will make a trip to the Galapagos Islands one you aren’t likely to forget in a hurry.
