Since visiting Pumalin in Chilean Patagonia almost 20 years ago, I have always been in awe of the conservation and re-wilding work that Doug and Kris Tompkins have done in both Chile and Argentina. To see at last the Ibera Wetlands was a dream come true. Reminiscent of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, this is a wilderness project on the grandest scale.
I have never taken my children on a real African safari, so plans are afoot. Having seen some of the best wildlife and landscape over many happy years (since 1974!), I am struggling to keep the ideal plan to less than six months, when we have at most three weeks. I really should know better.
