Enjoy long treks or gentle hill walks in the beautiful and majestic Himalayas
For adventurers and culture-seekers alike, Northern India offers an incredibly enchanting experience. Journey to scattered villages in the hauntingly beautiful foothills of the Himalayas or the tea plantations of Darjeeling and Assam to discover a way of life that has changed little for centuries.
Even with the majestic scenery of the High Himalayas, Uttarakhand remains one of India’s least visited, unspoilt and charming regions. cazenove+loyd has been instrumental in developing high-end, sustainable tourism in Uttaranchal and we can deliver an authentic experience that is still extremely comfortable.
In Ladakh, we can recommend luxuriously converted village houses which combine great comfort with very special access to Himalayan rural life. Walk in the mountains, picnic in orchards and raft on the Zanskar River or experience morning prayer at Thikse Monastery. Nestled in a relatively untouched part of North-Eastern India, near the borders with Sikkim, Bhutan and Nepal, lie the tea plantations of Darjeeling. Here, the locals have plucked leaves from the tea bushes for hundreds of years and a trip to this area isn’t complete without a visit to a tea estate to learn about the intricate processes of tea production. Stay in a colonial-style planter’s bungalow above the River Rungeet with breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains.

Stories from Northern India
"Almora walks and village houses - simply spectacular and my favourite part of the trip. Our guide from Shakti was brilliant, houses were divine and comfortable and rustic and food delicious. Can’t fault it."
"Delhi sightseeing was excellent. The guide, Bahrat was faultless and very charming. I also really enjoyed the cycle ride through Old Delhi - that struck me as really original and an opportunity to see the most authentic part of the city in a non-tourist way."
"Our guide, Rohan, in Ladakh was a very lively and thoughtful person and he made an enormous difference to our experience because of his sense of caring. The driver Adus was very quiet but steady and lovely. The household staff were delightful especially Bettina at Stok. The food was delicious (Shey and Stok were standouts). The houses were in the very best taste. Camping was a hoot. The orchestration of the experience was so very well done and we loved having a delicious home on arrival (Shey) and saving the best for last (Stok). Nimoo is an amazingly sweet little town - Ladakhi agricultural practices of 2000 years and seen in 100 year old trees and waterways is one of the miracles of this miraculous place. We were fed at a picnic table in an orchard. Lying under the stars on the rooftop Taru."
"The train journeys were fascinating and by far my favourite way to travel around India. You could not have provided a better, kinder, more charming guide - he excelled in every aspect and was a complete joy to spend a week with. We felt ever safe with Prashant despite the lovely days spent navigating hairpin bends and thousand metre drops."
"The mountain village walks were thoroughly enjoyable and memorable and a great warm up to the draw dropping experience of Leti, which completely awed us with its majestic setting, comfort, gourmet food and unique walks through terraces, remote villages and mountain ridges."
When we first met our guide, Prabal, I was a bit worried he was a Gurkha from Darjeeling (ie, not a Ladakhi), but he could not have been a better guide – I think he's one of the best we have had anywhere in the world. He rearranged the trek without missing a beat, was always cheerful and really knew his stuff. He was a pleasure to be with.
