Explore colonial cities and otherworldly cloud forests

Ecuador is a very special destination and visitors always leave with a renewed appreciation of the brilliance of nature. With its fascinating Spanish colonial cities, spectacular Andean scenery, Amazonian rainforest and rich, indigenous culture, we consider it one of South America’s most exciting destinations.

Some of the best jungle lodges in South America are located in the Ecuadorian Amazon and a stay here combines well with a few days in a family-run colonial hacienda in the Northern or Southern Sierras, where we have discovered some lovely, small lodges in areas with wonderfully few visitors.

I’ve never quite been convinced by rainforest lodges. I find the vegetation slightly oppressive and the ability only to explore on cut paths a little claustrophobic. A recent trip to the wide open waters of some of Brazil’s black water tributaries changed all of that, but that was on a private yacht, so quite another story.
After 25 years, we at cazenove+loyd each have our own special relationships with the places where we send our clients. We tend to travel to ‘developing’ regions and often, we are the first guests in a new lodge or small hotel.
After over two weeks in Ecuador, visiting Cotopaxi National Park twice, and having a number of other opportunities to witness Cotopaxi’s glacier-covered slopes, this was the first time that I had a proper view of the volcano, who’s perfectly conical 5,897m summit would be my challenge just 24 hours later. This photography is also part of a current personal project of six-minute exposures.
San Agustin de Callo is like no other hotel I have ever had the pleasure to stay in or photograph. It is completely unique due to the fact that it was initially an Inca Palace. Much of the Inca stonework, such as the dark section seen on the right of this photo, still remains. In the 16th Century, after the downfall of the Inca Empire, it was used as a San Franciscan Monastery.
