The gaucho tradition (dating back to the early 18th century) is still very much alive in Uruguay and horseback riding is deeply interwoven into their culture. It is a rare experience to be led by such passionate and skilled guides through largely undiscovered and unexplored areas of the country, otherwise inaccessible by road.

We can arrange for clients to spend a week with traditional gauchos, riding along some of the most beautiful unspoilt beaches in Uruguay. Galloping through vastly varied sceneries, along deserted sandy beaches, through wetlands, passing rice fields and across huge expanses of pastureland in Uruguay is an experience unlike any other. You will ride between sand dunes, into pine forests, around freshwater lagoons and through palm groves. Your guides will be traditional Uruguayan gauchos, who have incredible knowledge and passion for their country.

Along the way, we will arrange for you to stay in beautiful traditional estancias, beachside hotels and working farms. All of the settings are idyllic and the lodgings very comfortable and will provide gourmet suppers, a welcome relief after a day in the saddle. Your days will vary from whale watching on horseback (the best months of the year for this are November and December) to lunchtime swimming in the sea or wildlife watching. The coastline here is a haven for marine life such as dolphins, whales and seals because of its clear and unpolluted water.

We can vary the routes and length of the ride and clients can join a group or we can tailor-make it on an exclusive basis depending on preference. The gauchos match the experience of the rider with the right horse to ensure a fantastic experience with wonderful scenery and fabulous food. We recommend this experience to any client looking to explore Uruguay from a unique perspective and to gain an understanding of the country’s culture and beauty.
