Three reasons why Costa Rica makes a fantastic family holiday
This wonderful country has something to suit every age and stage. We give you three reasons why you should take your children on an eye-opening adventure here:
1 The fun and sense of adventure
Costa Rica is the perfect destination for families who like adventure and keeping active while on holiday. There are a huge number of exciting activities to keep your children entertained; from ziplining through stunning canyons, to stand-up paddle-boarding on calm coastlines. A highlight for me was white-water rafting in and out of the stunning jungle hideaway Pacuare Lodge – although please note that this requires a minimum age of 12. The journey in was a gentle introduction to rafting (grades 1 and 2 on the international scale of river difficulty), whereas the rafting out (grades 3 and 4) certainly got my adrenaline pumping, especially as our fun-loving guide kept pretending to fall in. What an incredible way to arrive at and leave a lodge, and one that your family will be sure to never forget.
2 The wildlife
Costa Rica is incredibly biodiverse and wildlife can be spotted all over the country. In fact, it is home to more than 5% of the world’s biodiversity, despite only taking up 0.03% of the Earth’s surface. From monkeys and sloths to birds and frogs – you name it, this destination has it. A standout moment for me, and undoubtedly one of the most memorable wildlife encounters of my life, was spending the morning dolphin spotting in the Golfo Dulce. I naively thought that we would most likely spend most of the morning searching for dolphins, and might see one or two if we were lucky. Little did I know that we would come across a school of more than a hundred, many of which were following our boat, and leaping within feet of us. This is just one snapshot of the wonderful wildlife that Costa Rica has to offer.
3 The people
Costa Ricans are among the happiest people I have ever come across. I was totally struck by their positive outlook on life; they are constantly laughing and joking and are a total joy to spend time with. It’s unusual, and quite remarkable, to find a group of people who enjoy using sarcasm as much as the British do but this nation almost compares. The country is considered the happiest place to live in Latin America and this really is reflected in its people. Their national motto is ‘pura vida’ (loosely translated as ‘life is good’) and this echoes just how jolly and fulfilled they tend to be. Our hand-picked guides are no exception and will ensure that there is a never a dull moment for you and your family.
