With its miles of stunning Indian Ocean coastline and phenomenal wildlife, Kenya makes the perfect bush and beach honeymoon. The country is one of the best destinations for year-round safari in Africa, harbouring the Big Five in the Masai Mara. We have designed just one example of the kind of extraordinary honeymoon we can arrange in Kenya – this one taking in Nairobi, the Masai Mara and Diani on the coast.

DAY 1

On arrival in Nairobi, you will be met and driven to Eden, a small boutique hotel in the Langata suburb on the south-west side of Nairobi. This peaceful retreat is a wonderful place to recover from your flight. Warthogs, parrots, peacocks and monkeys roam the gardens, and the hotel is like a living art gallery – local artwork and fabrics everywhere. There is a lovely verandah where you can put your feet up with a book or enjoy breakfast, lunch, drinks or dinner in the leafy surroundings.

DAY 2

After a good night’s sleep in your stylish and comfortable room, you will enjoy breakfast on the verandah overlooking the garden. Afterwards, your specialist local guide will collect you and accompany you to the nearby AFEW Giraffe Sanctuary (AFEW stands for ‘African Fund for Endangered Wildlife’) to learn about the beautiful and endangered Rothschild’s giraffe and the conservation efforts to protect these wonderful creatures. You may even get the chance to hand-feed them, an amazing experience. Your guide will then take you to the Karen Blixen Museum, where you can delve into some of the history of the city, and for a game drive in Nairobi National Park with a delicious lunch washed down with Champagne.

In the afternoon, you can visit the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a rescue centre for orphan elephants where you can ‘adopt an elephant’. Of course, if you’d rather just relax at the hotel and soak up the rays, this is also perfectly possible. Everything is totally flexible and tailored to you.

DAY 3

On your third day, you will be driven to the domestic airport, from where you will fly to the Masai Mara for three nights at Elewana Sand River Camp. Set within the Masai Mara National Reserve, Sand River Camp lies on the banks of the river after which it was named. Game here is rich and plentiful year-round and the reserve is known for its large concentration of big cats. Right on the route of the great migration, guests here often watch wildebeest and zebra crossing from their tents, depending when they travel. On arrival, you will enjoy lunch before an afternoon game drive, followed by sundowners around a campfire on the Mara Plains. In the evening, you will return to the camp for dinner under the stars.

DAY 4

On your second day in the Mara, you will enjoy the wonders of this phenomenal wildlife destination. We arrange a special bush breakfast on your morning game drive. Lunch will be back at the camp, after which you can retreat to your beautiful, tented room for a siesta before your afternoon game drive. In the evening, we will set up a special private dinner at the camp for you.

DAY 5

This is your last day in this magnificent place, so you can either head out on a game drive or two, or just relax at the camp if you prefer. To top off your stay here, in the early evening, we will arrange for private sundowners to be set up for you on the banks of the Sand River, before a delicious last dinner.

DAY 6

Next, you will fly from the Mara to the Kenyan coast and head to the beautiful Kinondo Kwetu for four nights. This gorgeous, small and owner-run beach hideaway is one of our favourites along this stunning coastline. Set in a quiet location, it is a very peaceful place to be and boasts two swimming pools and a spa. Collapse on arrival and just relax and enjoy this heavenly retreat.

DAYS 7-9

You can do as much or little as you like at Kinondo. Spend your days here relaxing by the swimming pool, taking a dip in the warm, azure waters of the Indian Ocean or lazing on the lodge’s private beach. We can recommend some great nearby places for lunch and dinner serving exceptional seafood. There are plenty of other exciting things to do here – from snorkelling and scuba-diving adventures around Robinson Island and the marine park to horse riding along the beach.

To enjoy during your stay, we have thrown in a massage each in the spa as well as an extraordinary trip to a secluded sandbank that completely disappears in high tide and emerges during low tide. Here, you can snorkel and enjoy a sumptuous picnic lunch before returning to the lodge.

DAY 10

Fly back to Nairobi, from where you will be taken to Four Points Sheraton to relax and enjoy a tasty dinner before your flight home.

WHEN TO GO

Kenya is a year-round destination. Between July and September is the country’s dry season, which also coincides with the country’s great migration, making this a very good time to go. However, travel in the rainy season has its appeal too, as it means fewer visitors and lush, emerald landscapes.
